Two kinds of ground in one county
Denton County sits where the heavy clay of the prairie to the east meets the sandier, rockier ground of the Cross Timbers to the west. Clay moves with the seasons and needs deeper footings and room to flex; sandy ground drains well but needs a wall built on a solid, compacted base. We look at the soil on your lot before we decide how to build on it.
Slopes, lots and retaining walls
The rolling lots around Flower Mound and the lake mean a lot of retaining walls, terraced beds and stone steps. A wall here holds back the soil and also takes the runoff that comes down the hill after a storm, so we put gravel and drains behind every one.
Growing neighborhoods
Newer subdivisions mean new brick and stone exteriors, flower beds and outdoor grills, along with the screening walls and entry monuments that come with them. Older parts of Denton and Lewisville bring repairs that need to match brick that's been on the house for decades.
Retaining walls and permits
Most cities in the area require a permit, and often an engineered design, for a retaining wall over about four feet tall or one that holds up a driveway, a pool or a slope behind a house. The exact rule varies from city to city, so we check with the building department before we quote a tall wall, and we tell you up front when an engineer needs to be involved.
Questions we hear in Denton County
How tall can a retaining wall be without an engineer?
Around four feet is a common line, but it varies by city and by what the wall holds up. Walls holding up a driveway or a slope near the house often need an engineer at any height. We'll tell you which applies before we quote.
